Why didn't the native americans and mexican indians mix together?

Why didn't they mix? I always thought that mexican indians built pyramids, while natives did other things like hunt. They didn't really mix, were they like in zones or something? Why didn't the Aztecs rush upward to attack the indigenous people of the USA. They were all indigenous people. Why didn't they mix together? Was it for some reason?
