Is it worth it to drive without a license in this situation?

I am only 16 and in NJ you need to be 17 to have a license. The problem is that I have to be at school later today, which is 5 miles away, and I have no ride. I have my permit and I am an excellent driver, I have tons of experience. My parents left one car at home because they carpool to work. Should I take it? And what is the penalty if I'm caught? I could only find info about if you drive w/ an expired license.
