My sims won't listen to me?

I have the Sims 2 Double Deluxe and Open For Business. I was playing with my family that has just a mom and a dad and the mom is pregnant. I made the dad get a job in the medical career, and then go to bed because he was tired. He slept through the night and all, but when his carpool arrived in the morning for him to go to work and I told him to stop sleeping, he wouldn't wake up and missed his ride. His wife was sleeping too and when I told HER to wake up and paint, she wouldn't either! I don't know what to do and I just designed the whole house on my own and don't want to move them out. What should I do?
